Descendants of John Dinnie

Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN1 DINNIE

Notes for JOHN DINNIE:

Known in the Forest of Birse in 1618

The existence of John Dinnie along with his son, also John, is evidenced when in 1816 they witnessed the transfer of land for the Marquis of Huntly to John Davidson, documented as the nearest lawful heir of the deceased Andrew Davidson in Belwode.

John Dinnie Jnr's entitlement to witness such a legal document, leads to the assumption that he would be over 21 years of age, and to estimate his birth around the 1590's, and his fathers birth date estimated in the 1570's.

                        Memorabilis by Robert Dinnie 1878

The surname "Dinnie" may be traced back from the present date (1878) at least upwards of two hundred years in the parish of Birse, and that there were two branches distinguished in the locality about eighty years ago by the appellation of the "Black & White Dinnie's" but it is now unknown whether the name arose from the same source roots.  However they did not claim any relationship as far back as I can remember although I can recollect that the one branch was dark haired, and a little dark of complexion while the others were generally white or fair haired, and I claim the White Dinnie's for my ancestors I may exclaim with the poet

"Can taint of skin or shape or air

                 With comeliness of deeds compare"

I cannot go further back on the parental side of my ancestors with any reliable authority than my Great Grandfather John Dinnie who was farmer in Birkinhill in the lands of Midstrath in the parish of Birse before, and after the year 1700 where it appears the Dinnie's were tenants for the space of eighty years at least. I know nothing of my Great grandmother but it seems that he (John Dinnie) from one of which descended the Dinnie's tenants in the Croft of Marywell.  The other son William was my Grandfather, as was married first to Rebaka Burnett . They had two sons William & James from which the Dinnie's now in Kincardineshire are descended, He was again married to Isabell Macky my Grandmother with whom he had two sons and one daughter. John who was formerly tenant in Bogiesheil and Robert my father who was born at Birkinhill in the year 1765.  He afterwards resided at the Croft of Longholm where he was married in January 1802 to Jane Findlay my mother, and died at Allancrich in the year 1847 where he was tenant of upwards of 42 years.

My ancestors on the mother sidethe Findlays as far as I can learn came from Huntly about 400 years ago to Deeside.  My Great Grandfather John Findlay was tenent at Bandory in the parish of Aboyne, and was married to Jane Gordon a natural daughter of one of the Lords of Aboyne, and her mother ws said to have been one of the Davidsons at the time proprietors of Bellwade.  Their son John Findlay my Grandfather was also married to Jane Duncan my Grandmother.  She was on of the Duncans of Glantanner, and their oldest daughter Jane Findlay my mother was born at Bandory in the year 1779, and died on the 12 August 1858 at Alancrich in the parish of Birse.

Sarah in Aberdeen ---------

Listed in the 1881 Census of Aboyne 170/3 Page 4 as a 73 year old Mason living with his 70 year old wife Celia at Wood Cottage, Aboyne Aberdeenshire.

Robert wrote a poem in 1887 about his grandmother titled "My Grannie Tibbie Macky". The original manuscript of this poem in Robert's copperplate hand writing is in the possession of Gordon Dinnie, researcher and compiler of this Family Tree.

Listed in the 1891 Census of Birse 170 03 003 as an 83 year old Retired Mason living at Wood Cottage with his 81 year old wife Celia and their 23 year old unmarried grand daughter  Margaret J. Watt child of their daughter Barbara and her husband George Watt, 52 year old Head Carpenter at the 'Crystal Palace' London.

A Grandfather Clock exists in the family displaying the following information fastened inside the back panel - "This Grandfather Clock was made for Wm. Hay by Wm. Spark, Aberdeen, for the agreed sum of £8. Scots, in the year 1806. Robert Dinnie married Celia, daughter of  the above Wm. Hay and got possession of said G. F. Clock in the year 1847. Digby, fifth son of the above Robert Dinnie getting possession in 1892"

In the 1800's £1 Scots was one 12th of £1 English and valued at 1s 8d, therefore the £8 Scots paid for the clock had a value of 13s 4d. In today's decimilised currency it would be costed at 66p.

The clock became the possession of Digby's son Cecil Hay Dinnie in 1929, then to Cecil's daughter Celia Hay Dinnie (Mrs Robert Foster) in 1971, The following year it was handed down to Celia Margaret Currie (Mrs R G L Duncan), great grand daughter of Digby Dinnie, who was the owner in 1997.
