John and his brother James moved from Dundas County, Ontario, Canada to Grand Forks, North Dakota on the 20 March 1881.

 

On the 14th September 1881 John applied to become a Citizen Of United States on application No. 330 of the Territory of Dakota, County of Grand Forks. His application stated that he was born in Ontario  on or about the year 1853 and that emigrated to United States and landed at the port of Detroit on March 1881.

 

The District Court, State of North Dakota reviewed application for Citizenship which was supported by P. W. Hennessy and W. J. Elliot who witnessed that John had resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction  of the United States for five years and for one year last past within the Territory of Dakota and the State of North Dakota, and vouched to his good moral character. Subscribed and sworn in open Court on the 1st March 1890, Page 61. The court ordered that he be admitted to be A Citizen of the United States of America.

 

He set himself up as a General Contractor but due to his strict attention to business he steadily became one of Grand Forks' most prosperous and successful business men. Around 1888 he erected a complete brick manufacturing plant on his property and by 1889 had started producing bricks of superior quality. The following year his brother James became a partner in the business and the firm took the name 'Dinnie Bros.,'. By 1894 the Grand Forks Brick Company was organised with John as a Director.

 

By 1897 the business was operating as the 'Red River Valley Brick Company' with John as a stockholder. Many of the buildings in Grand Forks, and indeed the state, had been erected by John and his brother James.

 

The Red River Valley throughout its entire length was dotted by buildings of their construction. Their work also extended west of the Minnesota line as far as Rugby, and for many years gave employment to up to 200 man constantly, and manufactured three and four million brick annually. The bricks had a distinctive clear cream tint.

 

Some of the buildings attributed to the Dinnie brothers was the YMCA, Carnegie Library, Clifford Building, Norman Glass Block, Hotel Dacotah, New Hampshire Block and the Corliss Block are a few of the many structures erected by them. Fargo was largely rebuilt by this firm after the fire of 1894

 

John also had also extensive farming interests in the vicinity

 

He was a member of the 'Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and Elks'.

 

He occupied a prominent place among the leaders of the affairs of Grand Forks, North Dakota.

 

He was elected 8th Mayor of Grand Forks serving two terms between 1896 - 1904.

His brother James was the 12th Mayor of Grand Forks 1914 - 1918.

James was a member of the School Board.
